Finally Retirement Is In Sight!

Retirement planning has begun in earnest in the Kernick household! It brings me great joy just typing that sentence! We have talked about what we want to do with our free days and dreamed about trips that last as long as we care to make them. Now we are ready to pick a date and start figuring out how to make all those dreams a reality!

I have been a stay-at-home Mom for 21 years, a privilege I thoroughly enjoyed. Now that one child is in university and the other is about to graduate high school, I've gone from full-time employment to part-time. I had the best job in the world but it doesn't come with a pension. Hugs and kisses do not pay retirement bills though so we need to be realistic about our finances.

John is a veteran with a nice pension. We've managed to save some money and have some investments. We currently have our own company and are trying to slowly build up a cash reserve within it to help fund the lifestyle we hope to have. But we have been living on one income for a very long time and have some debt, which is worrisome.

The main reason for starting this blog is to give you some ideas for both retirement planning and how to implement a few changes now to make things easier when your time arrives. However, part of it is holding ourselves accountable for timelines and plans. A little accountability goes a long way. You are our witnesses...good luck with that job!

FYI...we are not retirement professionals. We have no accreditation or training in any area of finance. And we won't pretend to be. We are average people who want the best retirement possible and are willing to do the work to make it a reality. So why not share what we learn with you?

Get ready to learn a few things, be reminded of a few basics, and figure things out! All in a laid-back, easy-to-understand way. Feel free to comment, share your own ideas, or ask questions. A vlog and/or podcast is in the works too! Stay tuned for more on that. Alright, let's get this started...
